Curriculum statement

At St Laurence Catholic Primary School our vision is ‘Through God’s Grace a community growing in knowledge and understanding’. Our fundamental aim is to enable all children to fulfil their potential with Christ at the centre of all we do. This includes spiritual, moral, academic, emotional, social and creative development.

Intent

We value each child as an individual with a unique potential for learning. This enables our children to make a positive contribution to the wider community and following Gospel values, ensures that they are fully prepared for life in British society and for their role as citizens.

Our curriculum has been carefully designed to:

  • Engage and excite the children
  • Develop active learning
  • Encourage independent learning and resilience
  • Allow children to make links
  • Involve parents and carers
  • Enable children to develop skills for the future
  • Extend children’s understanding and relationships with their community and beyond

Implementation

Our curriculum provides thorough coverage of the skills, concepts and knowledge set out in the 2014 National Curriculum programmes of study (Years 1 to 6) and the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (Nursery and Reception).

We follow a topic based curriculum which is planned in thematic units of work following the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). Topics are chosen to capture the interests and imaginations of our children. Themes include Temples, Tombs and Treasures, Active Planet, Time Travellers, Seeing the Light, and Out of Africa as well as many other exciting topics. Each theme is introduced through a ‘Sparkling Start’ (Curriculum Launch Day) which is designed to engage children in their learning and a ‘Fabulous Finish’ to celebrate the knowledge, skills and learning outcomes for each child.

Skills-based learning is developed by linking subjects such as history, geography, art, design technology and music to the topic being studying. This allows children to make purposeful links in their learning. We also use every opportunity to make further links through reading, writing, maths, science and computing where relevant. RE, PE and Music and Modern Foreign Language are taught as discrete subjects to allow coverage of the main objectives and age appropriate skill development.

We have a strong commitment to outdoor learning and environmentally-based work. Through their investigations of the environment, pupils acquire first-hand knowledge and develop skills across the curriculum.

The curriculum overview for each year group can be found on Yearly Curriculum Overviews page.

Impact

Pupils leave St Laurence Catholic Primary School with a secure understanding of the academic content; with the understanding of how to be spiritually, morally, socially and culturally responsible and globally aware. We aim for all of our children to leave St Laurence as well rounded individuals: respectful, skilful and ambitious, with the motivation and passion to continue to learn and be the best they can be.
